Stanhope is quieter, more wooded, and less commercially busy than Cavendish. Sites feel more private with better tree cover, and the campground has a more relaxed family atmosphere. The tradeoff is that Stanhope is a short drive from the beach rather than a walk — but Brackley Beach is just 10 minutes away and far less crowded than Cavendish.
Yes — Stanhope is significantly easier to book, especially for July and August. While Cavendish sells out within hours of the reservation window opening, Stanhope often has availability weeks or even days before arrival in summer. It's the best backup if Cavendish is full, and many campers prefer it once they've stayed here.
The wooded sites at Stanhope offer much better wind protection than Cavendish's more open layout. If the OpenAir wind reading is showing 30+ km/h from the northwest, you'll feel it less at Stanhope. However, overnight fog is common throughout the national park in June and early July — pack a tarp and expect damp mornings.
Stanhope has washrooms, showers, and a dumping station for RVs. It's a more basic setup than Cavendish — there's no camp store or laundry on site — but everything essential is covered. The Brackley Beach amenities and a small café are a short drive away.
Stanhope sits near the Covehead Bay area, which is excellent for shorebirds and waterfowl, particularly in late summer and fall. The mix of forest, dunes, and estuary habitat draws a wide variety of species. Early morning — especially when the OpenAir conditions show calm wind and clear skies — is the best time to walk the edges of the campground with binoculars.
